With such a riveting title this post can only be all sorts of awesome. It’s not.
Still, I’ve updated the blog. It’s minimal at best, but has consumed about an hour of my time. It was mainly behind-the-scenes stuff (such as organising posts, deleting drafts, merging user accounts, etc) but there was something beneficial to come from all of this.
The design is the main upgrade. I was using the ‘Subtle’ theme for WordPress by GluedIdeas, but I had been using it for around 2 years and felt like a change. This is what it used to look like. New travel destination, new theme. I’m now rocking ‘Mystique’ by digitalnature, tweaked of course. For people that are interested in this sort of stuff, here’s what it looks like as standard:
In terms of what’s changed, I have:
- Replaced the default header with the postcard/iPhone picture from another WordPress theme. A little Photoshop editing was required here, such as removing the hearts and moving the postage stamp up to the top.
- Raised the RSS and Twitter icons at the top-right so that they’re a bit more prominent.
- Removed the gap between the menu bar and the main posts
- Messed with the widgets until I got something I liked.
If you’re really interested in how this was achieved, the CSS additions can be found in this text file. Simply paste this code into the ‘User CSS’ page under the ‘Mystique settings’ menu in the WP admin area.
I’m still messing with it, so there’s a high chance that if you’re reading this months from now the site will be completely different.
